Be a light by being different

In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus speaks of us as light-bearers [Matthew 5:14], that we are a light in this world and that this light should not be hidden, but shown for everyone. The light within us is supposed to change our surroundings and prevail over the darkness. But how can we be a light in this world? What can we do in our everyday life, at our schools, that will keep the light shining?

It takes courage to shine His light onto others. Why? Because the light that comes from Jesus is different from the world. Letting the light shine could take action in your opposite way of thinking, speaking, and acting. By doing that, being the different one, people’s opinions about you could be prominent, both the cheering ones and the questioning ones. And to be seen as the different one is not the easiest, especially at a young age. Perhaps you’re struggling with telling your classmates that you’re a Christian because you don’t want to be seen as the odd kid. But let’s remind ourselves that being different is a strength and nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, the Bible tells us that our different way of thinking about the world is good and something we should evolve in.

[Jesus praying to God for His disciples] “I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.” - John 17:14

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. - Ephesians 4:22-24

Let us cast away all the shame and instead start to clothe ourselves with confidence in our differences. Whenever you decide to be an antipole in your school, God will shine through. Whenever you talk and wherever you walk, your classmates will have the possibility to taste a bit of what the Kingdom of God looks like. It won’t always be easy, but it will always be worth it. Keep on being different and keep on being a light for your classmates.
